Alpha dog: Hands-on with Sony a7R II

¾ËÆĵ¶: a7R II¸¦ ¼Õ¿¡ Áã¾îº¸´Ï.. (¾ËÆĵ¶: Á¦ÀÏ Àß³ª°¡´Â ³ð)
42 is a good number - as well as being the answer to life, the universe and everything, it's also the number of millions of photodiodes that Sony has packed onto the sensor of its new a7R II.

And it's not just any old sensor either - the a7R II features the world's first full-frame backside illuminated CMOS, in a body which incorporates all of the major ergonomic changes made in the a7 II, released last year. The sensor is also stabilized, using a tweaked version of the 5-axis system in the a7 II which (we're told) delivers the same quoted 4.5 stops of benefit.

Ergonomically, the a7R II is to the original a7R what the a7 II is to the a7. The grip is much deeper and more defined, the control dial layout is different and the body is a little chunkier. If you've used an a7 II, the new a7R II will feel immediately familiar. Near-identical in fact.

In Sony's presentation to press in New York, one line caught our eye - 'Robust lens mount'. A nod, perhaps, to the widespread reports of weak and 'wobbly' mounts on the original a7R when used with certain lenses. This shot gives you a good view of the repositioned shutter release and front control dial, relative to the original a7R.

Interestingly, in a highly unscientific test, it did seem to us that the a7R II's control dials move a little more freely than the somewhat stiff dials on the a7 II.

The body of the a7R II is entirely made from magnesium-alloy, as you can see in this cutaway.

No surprises from the back - again, the a7R II is an identical match for the a7 II. But the viewfinder is different. Sony has incorporated new Zeiss optics for the XGA OLED finder, which result in a magnification of 0.78X - the highest of any full-frame camera currently on the market.

One of the most impressive features of the a7R II is its autofocus system. 399 phase-detection AF points cover 45% of the frame, which means over 60% coverage in either horizontal or vertical directions in the frame. That gives it more coverage than any full-frame camera out there. PDAF will work even with third-party lenses via existing adapters, including in continuous AF tracking mode.

This is potentially a huge deal - especially for Canon users. We've used an a7R II with a Canon 24-70mm lens and a Metabones adapter, and focus is indeed very fast indeed. We'll be looking at this in more depth as soon as we have a production sample camera, but for now, we're highly impressed. Canon should expect some cancelled EOS 5DS orders...

New to the a7R II is a small locking button on the exposure mode dial - handy if you tend to only shoot in one exposure mode (or for locking the camera into movie mode, as shown here). The a7R II is fully 4K-capable, and can shoot 4K footage at 30 or 24p.

As well as full-sensor capture, in a cropped Super 35 recording format (~15MP), the a7R II actually oversamples by roughly 2X to achieve 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution, eliminating moire entirely. In theory, this means that the a7R II should at least rival, if not exceed the quality of low ISO footage from the a7S in this cropped mode. It's also worth noting that the camera's maximum ISO sensitivity of 102,400 is available in both stills and movie modes.

The a7R II's resolution of 42.3MP might not be class-leading (the Canon EOS 5DS/R currently wears that particular crown) but we're expecting the Sony camera to be capable of excellent image quality. It remains to be seen exactly what image quality improvements will flow from the use of a BSI sensor design but we're very excited about the vibration reduction measures that Sony has taken to reduce shake from the shutter mechanism.

According to Sony, the shutter is considerably better damped, but an electronic first-curtain shutter is the real story here, in our opinion. It eliminates all potential for shutter-induced vibration, which was a problem with the a7R, especially when paired with longer focal length lenses. Furthermore, a full-resolution 'silent' mode allows you to capture images without the shutter curtains moving at all. This might mean that the a7R II is the first high-resolution camera we've seen that really, truly solves this problem.
