The superb quality of the RX10 III's lens is quite a technical achievement, to say nothing of the overall feature set Sony has included as well. Whether you're zoomed in or zoomed out, focused close or focused on infinity, you'll be impressed with the sharpness offered by this 24-600mm equivalent F2.4-4 zoom lens.

All that being said, it's time to come clean. As you can probably tell from my walk-around lens preferences, this camera is just not for me. Starting this review I knew the RX10 III wasn't particularly my style, and I didn't think I'd like it. In fact, I didn't like it at all when I began this review. But over the course of weeks of using the camera, I've actually come to admire it for what it is capable of.

It's not perfect, that much is certain. It's not a 'caught moment' camera, or a sports shooting machine, despite the allure of 14fps continuous shooting (remember, that's with focus locked). But for outright versatility - for when I (rarely) need 600mm and don't want to rent a DSLR lens - for when I need really good 4K in a compact package - and for when I need a camera that will get me usable shots in situations where ILC cameras are banned, the RX10 III makes a lot of sense. While the versatility of the optics and the quality of the images from this camera have converted me somewhat, there are still some nagging usability concerns (this is a Sony Cyber-shot, after all).

Body, handling and UI

The RX10 III bears more than a passing resemblance to the RX10 II, but as soon as you pick one up you'll be greeted with some fairly significant changes to ergonomics. The body has grown deeper along with a deeper grip, making this fairly heavy camera more comfortable to hold than you might expect. A new custom button finds its way onto the top plate, but it's still an uncomfortable reach to hit it (if you can even find it with your eye to the finder - the buttons are almost universally small and mushy).

A clever and new-to-Sony Zoom Assist feature helps you compose and frame your subject, which can be difficult at such telephoto focal lengths (read more here). The lens gains a new semi-customizable ring, bringing the total to three when you include the aperture ring (which can be de-clicked for video shooting). The other two rings are nicely damped, and can be assigned to either focus or zoom. You may find that you'll accidentally manipulate one of the rings when you go to change your aperture, however.

Unfortunately, the RX10 III's menu system continues to be a bit of a mess. And while a customizable Fn menu is available, many video-related functions can't be assigned to it. A customizable 'My Menu' or Fn menu to which one can add any of the options available in the full menu system is a no-brainer at this point, and we're perplexed as to Sony's continued insistence that none of its cameras would benefit from one.

Despite some improvements, the disorganized menu system, fussy UI and absence of a touchscreen on the RX10 III combine to make the shooting experience somewhat lacking, especially when you consider the sheer number of features the camera offers that both photographers and videographers may wish to take advantage of. Simple additions like a touchscreen, a dedicated AF point selector, or Fn and button/dial assignments customizable per shooting mode would go a long way in addressing this. But these are criticisms the DPReview editorial team has about many of Sony's offerings - if nothing else, they're consistent. But unfortunate.

Autofocus, lens and image quality

It should be apparent by now that we've all been impressed with the quality of the RX10 III's lens. It's sharp throughout the range, and offers pleasing background blur at longer focal lengths and shorter subject distances.

The 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor we first saw in the RX10 II and RX100 IV continues to hold up well. It's capable of impressive dynamic range and high ISO performance, as well as allowing very fast readouts that enable the RX10 III's impressive 4K/30p video output, high frame rate modes and 14fps continuous shooting (with AF locked; 5 fps with AF).

But then there's the autofocus system. It is contrast-detect only, meaning you can expect some hunting, especially at the longer end of the zoom. And while it aced our bike test for a steadily approaching subject - meaning depth tracking is quite good - the reality is that the camera too often goes into a long hunt if the AF point suddenly encounters a low contrast target. Quite often once the camera started hunting, it continued hunting, and slowly at that - meaning missed shots.

To make matters worse, subject tracking ('Lock-on AF') is as unreliable as it's always been on Sony cameras. For portraits, though, continuous Eye AF is still magical as ever, though it continues to be jumpy and can switch subjects erratically, rather than tenaciously sticking to your original (intended) subject.

As stated earlier, if you were hoping for easy action or sports shooting with a 600mm equivalent lens, well, the RX10 III isn't the best choice. We've shown how you can come away with some good sports shots using contrast detection, but it's really no match for a good phase detection system. Even the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 fares better with its Depth-from-Defocus system. In general, we tend to use the RX10 III in single-AF and either move the focus point around or use the center area and recompose, save for portraiture where Eye AF is very useful.

Video

Based on features and capability, the RX-series has always been as much about video as it has been about stills. The RX10 III is no exception, offering excellent 4K/30p output, high-frame rate video at up to 960 fps, and full HD at 120 fps, with minimal rolling shutter in the latter mode to boot. To help you get the most from those modes is the S-Log2 profile for maximum dynamic range, incredibly effective image stabilization in HD modes, and good autofocus with low amounts of hunting for a CDAF system.

When you combine those features with a stellar lens that goes to 600mm, you end up with a unique package (arguably unsurpassed for, say, a wildlife videographer). That said, quirks like the inability to assign many video-related functions to the Fn menu, among others, means you'll find yourself diving into the menus more than you like, and then missing shots. It's just another argument in favor of a customizable 'My Menu', and a re-think of the controls in general.

Real-world usage

Despite our concerns with the overall user experience, the RX10 III's versatile lens allows you to capture a variety of unique perspectives of a scene without even moving your feet. There's still a question I have a hard time shaking, though - do I really need 600mm with me all the time?

If you don't already know you do, then you probably don't. But while you could save some money by going with a camera that has less reach, at wider focal lengths the RX10 III's lens is just as good - if not better - than its competition. And of course that's not to say that you'll never use 600mm - it's just that you might find you use it less than you would expect (I certainly did).

There's a learning curve to getting the most out of a super telephoto lens, just as there's a learning curve to getting the most out of a super wide angle lens. But if you're willing to put in some work and experiment a bit, there's very little to find fault with when it comes to the versatility and photographic results the RX10 III offers.

The final word

The RX10 III might be pricey, and it might be bulky, but there's no arguing with the quality of the images you can capture with it. As a camera for a world traveler, an enthusiast videographer, or as a do-it-all companion for a visual storyteller, it is a compelling offering. In fact, there isn't another camera out there with both the zoom range and incredible video-related feature set of the RX10 III.

At this price point though, it can be hard to ignore the rest of the market. If you're okay with more bulk, you could get a less expensive APS-C DSLR or mirrorless system and a couple of kit lenses. You might not get to 600mm or any form of decent video, but you may get better autofocus performance. If you know you don't need weather-sealing or the extra reach, the less expensive Panasonic FZ1000 remains a solid option, with impressive AF to boot. If you prefer a smaller package with a touchscreen interface, Canon's G3 X goes to 600mm, but at the expense of a slower maximum aperture, slower performance in Raw mode, a softer lens, lack of 4K or high frame-rate video, and a built-in finder. And if you don't find yourself needing more than 200mm of reach, the RX10 II may even be a better option with its constant F2.8 aperture and built-in ND filter.

Conclusion
Compared to its peers, the RX10 III is the best all-around bridge camera on the market. The 1"-type stacked CMOS sensor offers the same (that is, very good) performance as its predecessor, while the new lens reaches from a wide angle of 24mm all the way to 600mm without any real optical compromises. The high-quality video continues to be a big draw, and barring some ongoing UI and customization concerns, ergonomic updates have made the camera more comfortable to use in the real world.
